Where curiosity, connection and community begin.
From our infant and toddler classes through transitional kindergarten, we believe children learn best through play, discovery and authentic, hands-on experiences that invite them to explore, wonder, create, communicate and make meaning. At the JCC, learning happens through relationships, conversation, movement, creativity, exploration and meaningful experiences that honor each child’s unique way of understanding the world.

The JCC’s Brody Family Early Learning Center is committed to excellence in education and to providing a safe nurturing environment for all of our children. We offer a child-centered, emergent curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, supporting each child in the learning process as a competent, capable learner. The program is designed to allow children to flourish as they interact with both their physical and social environments.
From our infant and toddler classes through transitional kindergarten, our curriculum for each age group provides experiences that are meaningful and authentic and respond to the interests and creativity of children, families and educators. Our school celebrates many perspectives and integrates Jewish values into learning and living.
The Brody Family Early Learning Center is recognized as a model for JCC early childhood centers by JCC Association and the Sheva Center for Innovation in Early Childhood Jewish Education and Engagement. We utilize the Sheva Center Early Learning Framework, which includes seven Jewish lenses – core, universal values that can be part of the lived experience of children, educators, and families as well as seven core elements of early childhood education, influenced by multiple philosophies of early education and the most recent and highly regarded research on children’s learning, adult development, and an understanding of the needs of 21st century families. Learn about Sheva.
We view the partnership between our families and our school as essential and important. Our active, engaged Early Childhood Parent Committee (ECPC) provides opportunities for involvement in school events, classroom happenings, special projects and the giving of tzedakah (charity).
Our spacious, light-filled classrooms are thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and connection. Each classroom offers inviting areas for children to explore, build, create, imagine, and learn through hands-on experiences that reflect their developmental needs and interests.
As part of the JCC, our children also have access to unique spaces and experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. Children enjoy swimming lessons in our heated indoor pool, movement and play in our full-sized gymnasium, daily experiences on our expansive outdoor playscape and hands-on exploration in our working garden. These special spaces are an extension of the classroom, giving children opportunities to move their bodies, connect with nature, develop new skills, and experience the joy of learning in a variety of environments.

Teachers Who Inspire
Our Early Childhood team is comprised of certified and accomplished lead- and co-teachers who share a progressive early learning philosophy, and who bring knowledge, experience, and a deep commitment to their work each day. They are supported through ongoing professional development, collaboration, reflection, and opportunities to deepen their understanding of child development and best practices in early childhood education.
Qualified administrators, specialists, and learning coordinators provide support, direction and partnership for our educators, families, and children.
Early Childhood Policies
Our staff participate in extensive training on understanding age-appropriate developmental milestones, and we collect data on a regular basis to inform our teaching practices and provide individualized accommodations for children in need.
Our Early Childhood program uses a team approach called the Chesed process which means “loving care” in Hebrew. Through the Chesed process, we identify children with a higher level of need, make referrals and provide accommodations.
For more information about supports available in Early Childhood programming, please contact Beth Mitchell, Director of Inclusion and Diversity, at [email protected] or 908-889-8800 x203.
At the JCC of Central NJ our Mission is to educate, enrich and empower our community- from generation to generation. The safety of children is the utmost priority at the JCC. Child Abuse Prevention takes an entire community and the JCC stands with our community, as our vision states. In our community, with our community, for our community.
The following is in place for all programs at our JCC that serve children. These protocols ensure that we protect your children while in our care, protect our staff and protect the JCC.
As designated mandated reporters, the director(s) of all Children’s Services programs are required to report any instance of suspected abuse whenever there is reasonable cause.
The early years are built on relationships.
At the JCC, our infant and toddler teachers provide responsive individualized care while creating a warm environment where children feel secure, connected and ready to explore.

We emphasize connection and relationship building in our infant and toddler programs. All experiences, including feeding and diapering, are important times of unhurried interaction so each child feels secure and nurtured. Every child has one classroom educator as their primary caregiver who is their point person throughout the day.
Learning is fostered by our responsive teachers who observe the babies and create a safe, challenging and inspiring environment. We believe that infants and toddlers need to explore and should have uninterrupted time to do so.
Spending time outdoors is a key highlight of our program, bringing the learning to our outdoor environment. Weather permitting, our infants and toddlers are outside daily, including stroller walks and exploring in our outdoor playspace.
Our littlest learners participate in our school’s exploration of Jewish traditions, culture and holidays. They participate in our weekly Shabbat gatherings and Jewish books, songs and rituals are incorporated into their daily learning.
Our infant and toddler program runs daily from 8:30-4:30 from September – August with early and late stay options. During the school year, it follows the Early Childhood calendar.
.
Every infant is seen as a capable, self-motivated learner. We provide care that adapts to your baby by honoring each child’s unique needs, rhythms, and personality.
Your child’s learning doesn’t stop when they leave the classroom.Through photos, videos, learning stories and regular communication on our Playground app, teachers give families a window into the questions, discoveries and relationships that make up their child’s day. In our infant and toddler program, parents receive daily reports on feeding, napping, and diapering.
We see families as partners — bringing together what we learn at school with what you see, hear and experience at home.
Infants are given uninterrupted time to explore in safe, thoughtfully prepared environments.
The Infant/Toddler Annex shares the same philosophy that makes the JCC Infant/Toddler program so special in an intimate environment.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten
At the JCC Brody Family Early Learning Center, preschool is a place to wonder, investigate, create and connect. Children learn through meaningful play, hands-on experiences and relationships with teachers who listen closely to their ideas and interests.
Our play-based, child-centered, Reggio-inspired classrooms give children the freedom to explore while teachers intentionally support their growing independence, skills and understanding of the world.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten
Our outdoor environment is an extension of the classroom.
Children spend time outside every day, where they have opportunities to climb, dig, pedal, build and investigate. A garden, an insect discovered, a pile of leaves or a new way to move through an area can become the beginning of meaningful learning.
We believe children need time and space to experience the world firsthand, and sometimes the best learning happens with dirt on their hands.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten
For young children, play is serious learning.
Our classrooms are filled with open-ended materials that invite children to experiment, make choices, test ideas and try again. Whether children are building with blocks, creating at the easel, developing a pretend world or investigating something they discovered outside, their play is filled with opportunities to think, communicate, collaborate and create.
Build. Create. Pretend. Investigate. Wonder.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten
Our preschool classrooms are thoughtfully designed to invite children to explore, make choices and follow their curiosity. Children have access to areas for building, creating, reading, writing, dramatic play, science, sensory exploration and more. Open-ended materials give children multiple ways to engage with their ideas and express what they are thinking.
Teachers are intentional about what they place in the environment and pay close attention to how children use the space. What children say, create, wonder about and return to helps teachers decide what comes next.

Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten
Children’s questions are often where learning begins.
Teachers listen for these moments and create opportunities for deeper exploration. Children may observe, ask questions, test ideas, represent their thinking, build, draw, research and revisit their discoveries over time. This practice is how children’s natural curiosity becomes meaningful learning.
No two days look exactly the same
Children experience a consistent rhythm that provides security and predictability, while still having plenty of room for choice, discovery and unexpected moments of learning.
Arrive and connect
Children settle in, reconnect with teachers and friends, and begin the day at their own pace.
EXPLORE AND INVESTIGATE
Children choose from thoughtfully prepared experiences and materials while teachers observe and support their play.
GATHER AND LEARN
Small- and large-group experiences support language, stories, music, movement, ideas and connection.
LUNCH AND REST
Time to refuel, recharge and care for our bodies.
OUTSIDE AND EXPLORE
Daily outdoor experiences provide opportunities for movement, nature, collaboration and discovery.
REFLECT AND RECONNECT
Children revisit their experiences, share ideas and prepare to head home.
Great teaching begins with paying attention
Our teachers observe closely — listening to children’s conversations, watching their play, noticing their relationships and looking for the questions behind their actions.
Those observations help teachers know when to step in, when to step back and when to introduce something new. Teachers don’t simply follow a lesson plan; they respond to the children in front of them.
Jewish life is woven naturally into our preschool experience through weekly Shabbat gatherings, songs, stories, celebrations and meaningful traditions.
Children experience the joy of being part of a community while developing a sense of connection, kindness and responsibility for one another and the world around them.
Your child’s learning doesn’t stop when they leave the classroom.
Through photos, videos, learning stories and regular communication on our Playground app, teachers give families a window into the questions, discoveries and relationships that make up their child’s day.
We see families as partners — bringing together what we learn at school with what you see, hear and experience at home.

Our JCC doors are always open to individuals and families of all financial positions. If you are interested in any of our programs but are experiencing financial hardship, the JCC has an ongoing financial assistance program that helps offset some of the costs of JCC programs. Our community is fortunate to have this financial assistance program readily available to those in need thanks to a generous endowment from the family of Isaac and Helaine Heller. And we are here to help those who can benefit from this assistance!
There are many reasons why an individual or family might find themselves thinking about financial assistance, and we are committed to providing that assistance. It is one of our top priorities. Our JCC believes that everyone in our community should have the same opportunity to be a part of our warm, welcoming center.
If you or someone you know could benefit from financial assistance, we strongly encourage you to apply – even if you are unsure about the process or the qualifications. Our Membership Director is happy to discuss the process with you and answer any questions you may have. The financial assistance process is confidential, and we are here to help you along the way because we know that being a part of our JCC provides unmatched connections, friendships and experiences.
